Do you find yourself reacting more strongly than you would want in certain situations? Maybe you don't act on your feelings, but remain uncomfortable in a way that is distressing. Maybe you act in ways you wish you could change, but cannot help yourself. Sometimes, you may even have insight into what is behind your reactions, but keep repeating the same patterns. I have found that EMDR therapy can be very effective in reducing the emotional intensity or reactivity that is sometimes attached to certain interactions, memories or scenarios. Sometimes, a handful of EMDR sessions can be enough to create a significant shift in the way people feel and react.
EMDR therapy is a structured and standardized approach of therapy that focuses on the distressing images, thoughts, feelings, and body sensations associated with traumatic or intense memories that are "stuck" or interfering with daily life. While focusing on the memory, individuals engage in bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or sound stimulation. This bilateral stimulation helps the brain process the traumatic memory, reducing its emotional intensity and allowing it to be integrated into other memories and experiences. In essence, EMDR helps individuals move away from the “stuckness” of traumatic memories and intense feelings, and towards a more resilient and emotionally healthy state.
I'd be happy to chat on the phone to see if EMDR therapy could be a good fit for you.
